Hi. I recently got Seasons expansion. Last night, I installed it just fine. I tried to run it, and got an error message "The application has crashed. This application will now terminate." Traced that problem back to hacks that were not seasons compatable. In order to fix that problem, I need to uninstall it. I could not uninstall using the uninstaller on the disk or by using the control panel-->add or remove programs. So, that meant that I had to manually uninstall the game by deleting the files from the hard drive, dumping the recycle bin, and then removing the registry entries. I did all of that. Next, I proceeded to re-install Double Deluxe. That installed with no problem. I started the game and it played as normal. No glitchy behavior.

So, I exited the game and tried to install University life Collection via the autorun.exe on the disk. I got the error message "The expansion pack is already installed." I then tried to re-install the game manually by copying the game files from the disks on to my hard drive. Same error message. Next, I attempted to install Best of Business Collection. Same error message. I installed Seasons and it installed and played with no problem.

Now, all I can think that I might have missed is the instructions I found for editing the registry keys gave the values for University and Open for Business, but not for the University Life Collection and Best of Business Collection. I don't profess to understand all this techy stuff, but perhaps the collections have different values than the games without stuff packs. I did go thru the registry line by line and have remove every reference I could find to university and best of business.

Now can someone help me out and give me an ideal of how I should proceed with the re-install? Is there some program that will help me re-install them? I have heard mention of a program called "clean installer", will that help with installing expansion packs or is that just for custom content? Is there somewhere else in the registry that I should look for reference to university and best of business?

I'm running WinXP on a Compaq Presario and up until I installed Seasons last night, the game was working correctly. I have got double deluxe and seasons re-installed and they are working fine. Also, all my video drivers are up to date.

Any help or thoughts would be most welcome.

  • 01:43 I am struck by the sudden urge to roleplay Lavinia from Shakespeare's Titus Andronicus. This would be very difficult. #

Fire is, like the cover says, a companion book to Graceling (don't pay attention to this graphic, my book says quite clearly "companion"). Chronologically it’s a prequel, but in setting inhabits a mysterious world separated by mountains from Katsa’s and populated with Monsters instead of Gracelings. Monsters are no less captivating or powerful than Gracelings, but they’re considerably more deadly; Dellians fear Monsters as much as they inexplicably love them. Lucky for Fire--the protagonist--she’s the only human Monster left in the Dells. The rest are animals: brightly colored with poisonous malice and a thirst for blood, especially Monster blood. What attracts normal people to Monsters is their beauty. As Clara eloquently put it, “Everyone wants a bit of something beautiful.” (p. 204) The danger with that sentiment is not everyone responds by fawning or showing devotion and adoration. Some people are driven to do mad, horrible, violent things. It’s because of the degree of reaction (overwhelming unless a person has learned to control themselves, which can be done), Fire has learned to grudgingly defend herself by making use of the hypnotic, controlling power she has as a Monster. Exerting her will onto others while distasteful and utterly disagreeable to Fire’s inclinations, helps keep her safe, but it also reminds her of her father.

Cansrel was a lustful man who abused his Monster abilities and enslaved people to do terrible things for him. Worst of all, he enslaved the Dellian King, drove him mad enough to kill himself and ran the kingdom into ruins. As Fire is constantly reminding herself: she is not Cansrel. That doesn’t stop other people from sending harsh, critical stares in her direction or judging her objectively before they’ve ever met her. But Fire is nothing else if not brave. For as much as Fire’s Monsterhood ostracizes and objectifies her to other people, it saved her from her father, Cansrel. In his beautiful little girl, Cansrel found a bit of himself, a person of like abilities to share a bond with, someone whom he could never harm, but train--in secret--to hone her abilities and harness her will for selfish and bad deeds. Before his sudden death, Fire learned everything she needed to know about her power: how not to be like Cansrel.

And so Fire, the novel, opens onto an eerie scene with a man and his Graceling son, a wicked boy who uses his Grace for cruel exploitation and perverse motivations. Immiker, who is also known as Lek, is creepy. He’s so creepy, I was glad the book moved onto the first part and chapter, leaving him far behind in favor of Fire. Fire, who is not creepy. Fire, who is determined to find the poacher who shot her on accident and the archer who shot him and continues to kill throughout the Dells. But to do that, she has to contend with a king who can’t resist her, vicious raptors, her own misgivings, and a prince who doesn’t hide his distrust and dislike of Fire.

I couldn't find an active Computer Science LJ and figured there were some CS students here =), so here goes:

I'm applying to computer science graduate schools, but I'm not sure what subfield (e.g., AI, Theory, Computer Architecture) to talk about in my research interests. Does anyone know how much it matters?

It's not that I don't know what I want to study -- I do. (Theoretical Computer Science, in particular, complexity theory.)

The problem is, I focused a lot more on machine learning and NLP as an undergrad (most of my undergrad research was in it, and 2 of my recs are from my supervisors), so I think my application looks a lot stronger to a Machine Learning person than to a theory person. (I do have a decent theory background -- I majored in math, took some advanced theory classes, and did research with a combinatorics professor [though it didn't go anywhere] -- but I don't think I'm currently as strong].

So should I say that I want to study Machine Learning (I'm stronger in it, but not really interested anymore) or Complexity Theory (less experienced, but it's what I want to study). How much does it really matter -- is it easy to switch once you're actually admitted? (Not sure how choosing an advisor really works...)
Or should I say I want to study both? (It's a good possibility, but I'm wondering whether it will dilute my research statement and make it sound rather rambly and less focused.)

Thanks!
